➽ 展覽介紹
甘比亞位於非洲西部為我國邦交國之一,本著敦睦邦交精神,該國派遣5位藝術家到臺北藝術大學進修與文化交流,並創作該國首部動畫影片,本展覽以非洲生活、文化為主題,透過藝術家們的巧思轉化成動畫影片,對於甘比亞動畫藝術的推廣有劃時代意義。本次展出除了幾位來自甘比亞藝術家作品外,也邀請幾位國內藝術家對非洲印象做創作,本著實驗動畫精神與生活文化為文本,作品內容包羅萬象,有別於現今一般娛樂內容的動畫形式。本展覽著重思考性、批判性與繪畫性,此理念與本次策展強調動畫藝術性的性質不謀而合,值得推薦給大眾觀賞動畫教育的另一種面貌,一些來自甘比亞和台灣年輕優秀動畫師的視覺想像。
動畫藝術隨著網際網路傳播與動畫設計教育的快速發展,已成為當代最熱絡的一種富含人文、美學、社交、經濟等多元的文化活動。相對於純藝術的艱澀難懂,動畫藝術反而更能以一種活潑鮮明的風格形式深入社會各個階層領域,反映當代特有的物質生活與精神涵養,更同時扮演著舉足輕重的地位-主流文化與次文化之傳遞角色。甘比亞首次在台灣舉辦動畫藝術展,正式宣布該國動畫創作的出現,結合台灣動畫蓬勃發展,透過本次安排於台北數位藝術中心的交流展出,無疑是對動畫藝術國際化與跨文化的最佳宣傳。
➽ Exhibition Introduction
Gambia is one of our diplomatic countries that located at West Africa. Based on the purpose of diplomatic friendship, five Gambian artists were sent to visit Taipei National University of Art for advanced studies and produce their first animated film. The topic of this exhibition is life and culture in Africa, converted into animated film by the ingenuity of artists. It’s a great landmark of popularizing Gambian animated artwork. This exhibition contains artworks from Gambian artists, and also invited some local artists to creating works based on the impression of Africa. Using the experimental animation as the purpose, and the life and culture as the text, the creations are all-inclusive, but different from the entertainment animation forms nowadays. This exhibition focused on thoughtful, critical and painting skills. This idea coincides with the artistic of animation that emphasized in this curatorial. These visual imagery from excellent Gambian and Taiwanese animators, are recommended to the messes for viewing the different side of educational animation.
The animation art had becoming a popular cultural activities that rich in humanities, aesthetic, social, economic and etc. in the wake of internet communication and education of animation design. Relative to the purely artistic that hard to understand, animation art can penetrate deeply into different fields of the community easily with a lively and distinctive style. It responses the material life and spiritual cultivation in contemporary era, and plays a decisive role that delivers the mainstream culture and subculture. This is the first time that Gambia holds animation art exhibition in Taiwan, that officially announced the animation creation had appeared in Gambia. This exchange exhibition set in Taipei Digital Art Center, combined with the booming of Taiwanese animation, is undoubtedly a best promotion for internationalization and intercultural of animation art.

Hui-Yu Yu
Born in 1990 in Taoyuan.
Currently studying for the master’s degree of New Media Art, Taipei National University of the Arts. Most of her past works are interactive arts shown in 3D. This is not the first time using the animation, but the creation technique she uses in this time is different. She tries to create the work by Hand-painted frame by frame for the first time in order to express the broken memory in the dream by the image of the story.

George,甘比亞人,出生於1981年在Nyofelleh。畢業於甘比亞大學,而後於印尼就讀美術研究所。
曾在外國學生中獲選參加750公尺帆布畫比賽。
George擔任多年的美術老師,目前在台北藝術大學就讀研究所。
最近,他的動畫作品“MY LIFE STORY’’剛通過評鑑,而他的第二部動畫作品“DISABILITY DOES NOT MEAN INABILITY”目前正在展出。
GEORGE SAMBOU
George is a Gambian by Nationality, Born in a village called Nyofelleh in1981,he graduated from the Gambia College after which he went to further his studies in Fine Art in the Institute of Senin Indonesia in Bali-Indonesia.
He was among the foreign students who were selected in Indonesia to take part in a 750m canvas painting.
George who is a Fine Art Teacher with several years of experience is currently doing his Masters at Taipei National University of the Art.
He recently passed his Evaluation project in animation entitled “MY LIFE STORY’’ and currently exhibiting his second animation project entitled “DISABILITY DOES NOT MEAN INABILITY”

我的作品靈感來自大自然時而美麗、熱情,時而無情、殘酷的多種樣貌。當我觀察自然界,我看到了人類活動所帶來的破壞,而我卻無能為力。地球的生態平衡已受到嚴重破壞,而全球暖化和臭氧層稀薄化等現象也影響著地球上的每一寸土地。因此,我利用所取得的創作工具來表達我的強烈感受,並企圖重現地球的自然面貌。

My work is inspired by the natural globe with its beauty, cruelty, hostility and hospitality. When I looked at nature, I see its destruction of human activities but I can’t help. It is virtual impossible to find undamaged nature. The globe’s ecological balance has been severely compromised, and phenomena such as global warming and the deterioration of ozone layer has affected every inch of the globe. I strongly feel that, to use a tool at my own disposal to preserve and restore the natural globe.

故事描述一個殘疾的年輕男孩,因父親無法接受自己的孩子天生殘疾而受到冷落。然而,男孩的母親設法在沒有父親的支持下,盡其所能的扶養男孩長大。母親的支持使男孩長大後成為一名電腦工程師,並且在頂尖的企業旗下工作。

The story is based on a young and disable boy, who was hated so much by his father upon getting the news that his newly born baby boy was physically disabled. However the mother of the boy vowed to give her son the necessary support which she did with little or no support from her husband. With the support given the boy grew up to become a computer engineer, working for top and well established computer companies.

本作品探討著人類進步與環境變遷的問題,非洲已經不是我們想像中的落後,它已經成為一個開發之地。我們從一個非洲的國家甘比亞開始談起: 甘比亞的國旗,是由綠白藍紅所組成,分別代表樹林、和平、河流、草原,也是本作品的發想起源。
影片中,從外太空看地球,穿過原始森林和草原,之後人類開始介入,野生動物開始凋零,自然環境開始變遷。
最後我們得到了什麼?失去了什麼?
從一個非洲小國拓展視野到整個世界村。
地球只有一個,人類如何永續共存?

This work tries to probe the problem of human progress and environmental change. Africa is not that dropping behind as we think, she is now a land that well developed. We start the story from an African country, Gambia. The national flag of Gambia contains green, white, blue and red, which means forest, peace, river and prairie. And it is also the idea source of this work.
The video aerial viewing the earth from outer space, then through the primeval forest to the prairie. After that human get involved, wild animals and natural environment are dying and changing.
Finally, what we got and what we lost?
The vision extended from a small African country to the entire world village.
We have only one Earth. How can we human coexistence sustainability with her?

一個女孩,到了一個她從來都不曾想到過的國家,依據她的認知及想像會發生什麼事呢?本故事以夢的情景為主軸,透過手繪逐格拼貼,引領人思考對於異國可能的盼望與認知。夢本身反映了自我的潛意識,透過虛幻的思想情境,人在夢境中看到的只是微光中的景色。作品敘述在夢境裡異國旅途中會發生各種奇妙的事,雖然夢的意境多半是支離的片段、抽象的視覺,但不能否認它代表最真切的心理感受。

A girl went to a country that she have never think about. What will happened according to her knowledge and imagination? This story uses the scene of dream as a theme idea, leading viewer ponder about the possibility of foreign land, through collage of painted frames. The dream reflected the subconscious of the dreamer, through the illusory thinking situation, what we saw in the dream is just a view under shimmer. My work described many fantastic things that will happen in the dream of travailing in foreign country. Although the conception of dream are kind of fragmented pieces or abstracted sight, but the fact “the dream is representing the most vivid feelings”, cannot be denied.

動機來自於閱讀曼陀羅寫的《甘比亞河的女兒》 (the daughter of Gambia ),故事中描述甘比亞女兒的成年禮 ”(Initiation),必須要經過割禮(excision)的傳統儀式才可以成為真正成為女人 。不管是在傳統的部落中,還是自古以來女性被定義成為「女人」的方式,常會是充滿性別歧視的觀看方式,根深蒂固的習俗決定了作為女人的命運。
故事中不斷出現所謂「女孩」意象,從玩具的拆解和重組或是再現經典名畫中女性被觀看的角色,試圖透過超現實手法將玩具重新建構呈成放射狀的抽象性語彙,在手繪圖像象參雜絢麗色彩中,隱晦暴力和抽象語言之交錯,描述被既有觀念綑綁住的「性別刻板印象」。

The intention of my work is motivated by reading the article “The Daughter of Gambia River” (written by Mantra, published on Southern Weekly). The story described the ‘coming of age ceremony (initiation)’ of Gambian women. The daughter of Gambia River should experience female circumcision according to the traditional ritual, to become a “real woman”. This kind of way of “becoming woman” that filled with sex discrimination in traditional village or classical definition. Women’s destiny had been decided unfairly by ingrained custom.
The construct of “girl” appears continuously, the dismantling and restructuring toys and the women being watched from classical paintings, trying to reconstructing toys into radial abstract vocabularies through a surrealistic manner. The veiled violence and abstract language hiding behind beautiful paintings, describing the “sex discrimination” that tied by existing concepts.

當我們試著去了解一個國家時,是否可以用不同的方式去進行, 不再是文字、口述或圖像,反而是從一個不真實的影像中體會、感受。 希望能夠透過作品中的煙火,引起觀者對畫面的注意,再從中了解其背後的涵義。
在台灣與甘比亞之間,有著不同數量的煙火火花,其兩者的不同即是背後數據上的差異,這些數據描述了一個國家的樣貌,代表國家的生命,希望透過此方式,能讓更多的觀者了解甘比亞這個國家,以及體會其與本國之間的關聯。 我的創作媒材以觸碰螢幕展示為主,藉由觸碰畫面來選擇類別並發放兩地的煙火,其後將提示觀者這些火花所代表的意義。

Can we try to understand a country by a different way? Not through articles, describes or pictures, but experience and felling from an unreal image. I wish I can catch viewers’ eye from the fireworks in my work, and learn the meanings behind it.
There are various fireworks in Gambia and Taiwan. The difference is only the data behind it. These data described the appearance, the life of a country. I wish I can make viewers understand more truth about Gambia, and experience the connection between her and our homeland.
The creation media of my work is based on touch-screen displaying. Choosing category and shot the firework by touch the screen, then will shows the meaning of it.

甘比亞,一個遙遠未知的國家,顯現於甘比亞朋友的隻字片語、動作與我的想像之中,如同忽必烈底下一座座「看不見的城市」, 在馬可波羅的姿態、動作、語調及使用的象徵物之中,搬演著興衰起落,而作品也在觀者的姿態動作中敘述著甘比亞國旗的三個象徵:綠草、紅樹、藍河。卡爾維諾的小說如同設計精巧的魔術方塊,允許讀者自由組合故事的片段,進行多重解讀,而我在魔術方塊的不同切面上投射電腦繪製的3D影像,讓影像在流轉不居的空間中被分割、重組,形成虛實交雜的景象。影像空間層層疊疊,讓觀者可以悠遊穿越於其中,並交織組合成一個繁複多樣的畫面。

Gambia, a distant unknown country. I can only display Gambians’ voices and motions in my imagination. Like the Invisible cities of Kublai Khan. The rise and fall described under the attitude, motion, intonation of Macro Polo and symbols. The work also describes the emblems of Gambia’s national flag, following the motion of viewer: green grass, red trees and blue rivers. The Calvino’s novel is just like a well-designed magic cube, allowing readers to recombining the fragments of the story and have multiple interpretations. In my work, I project 3D computer graphic images on each sides of the magic cube, let the segmentation and reorganization happens on the images in the flowing space, and becoming views of chaos. The image spaces overlapping on each other. The viewer can freely passing through it, and interweave them into a complicated manifold image.

This animation work is about how woman are valued in the traditional wollof community. They are believed to be so paramount in setting up a good relationship in a family and society they are. As there is a saying in wollof which means well-being woman builds a good house. The Animation project is a metaphoric and poetic of woman, in whom a woman is, symbolized a tree. I believed that trees are seen useful and also play prestigious in traditional African societies.

以西非原住民宗教信仰泛靈論作為本創作的主題構想,他們相信自然界萬物擁有靈的存在並受到其保護,因而能對自然尊敬、和平共存,藉由此觀點,探討現今自然環境的變化,人們與自然的疏離、對環境的破壞、資源的消耗,正一步步將自然環境推向滅亡,而這樣的概念事實上大部份的人都知道,但到底要惡化到多麼嚴重的程度,人們才能夠真正的體悟,自然環境存在的重要?而那個能夠真正解決環境問題的方法,最終還是要回歸到每個人的內心來解答,希望藉由這個創作分享,讓每位觀者都能再次反思自身與環境之間的關係。

I use the animism from the faith of West African aborigines as my creation theme idea. They believes they are being protected by spirits from all living things in nature. Thus they can respect and coexist peacefully with the nature. From this idea, we investigate the changes of the natural environment. The humans now alienated from the nature, destroy the environment and consume the resources, which is pushing the natural environment into death. Actually most of us know about this, but shall we humans really understand the importance of natural environment, until the extreme deteriorated situation? You should seek your salve where you get your sore, the real answer of environment question should solve by ourselves. I wish every viewer can rethink the relationship between the natural environment and ourselves through my work.

非洲面具不僅在藝術上呈現色彩斑斕且富造型性的美學,更為重要的 是每副面具所象徵的神話儀式和社會功能 – 祭祀、祈福、狩獵、治病, 甚而是處決罪犯等。面具儼然成為一種交流的媒介和身分的轉換。其中「 重生」這個意義存在於絕大多數的面具之中。非洲人相信死亡並非生 命的終結,而是轉入到一個新生的狀態,而透過面具進行的儀式能使 人們超脫時空的限制進行一場與神靈的對話。
花同樣具有著多重意義的象徵,許多祭祀也多以花作為獻禮,然而其 神聖特性亦往往來自於短暫的生命。藉由花瓣所組成的種種象徵:蝴 蝶、時鐘、面具,以及花瓣本身輪迴的生命,試圖再現出「重生」此一過程的神聖經驗。

The African masks not only show the colour and shape of aesthetic, but also bring the symbol of myth rituals and social functions. The masks become a type of communicating media and transformations of identities. The meaning “rebirth” exists in most of the masks. The Africans believe that the death is not the end of life, but a process that will lead to rebirth. People can communicate with spirits without the limit of time and space through the rite hold by the use of the masks.
Flowers also have various meanings. Many sacrifices also use flowers as their offers. However the holy features are coming from their brevity life. The petals constituted many symbols: butterflies, clocks, the mask, and the life transmigration of itself. Trying to represent the sacred experience from the course of “rebirth”.
