➽ Exhibition Introduction

Back in the days of agricultural society people attend to the sunrise and sunset. They sow to ‘’the beginning of spring’’ and reap to ‘’grain in ear’’, living along the rhythm of four seasons, day after day, year after year.

Industrial progress changed how we live; mechanical machines roam on the streets, the tick tock of clocks hasten people to follow schedules, life becomes saturated with minutes and seconds and endless planning. In the contemporary the internet has become omnipresent, information is dispersed at the speed of thought, geographical distance collapses in virtual space, relationships intertwine in the real and virtual.

Between the swift exchange of speed and light a seam is cracked open, perceptions ride with wind and thunder, mirroring ourselves and others, mirroring the world as thousands of petals blossoming, continuously emerging meaning, the present, past and future becomes one, condensed into a infinite ray of light.

Time becomes duration in consciousness; memory collects into a stream, emotions become rhythm, affection follows form, at times frantic, other times mild, fluctuating fast or slow, constructing a rhythmic pulse.

Cage

Chen, Yu-Chun

➽ Work 1

Cage

The alarm clock is used to mark time and act as breakpoints to remind the user of an event, at the arrival of the pre-specified time, a loud reminder will be issued to remind users to proceed or terminate the event, which interrupts the linear time of the event. Multiple and trivial schedules can be dependent on the alarm clock, this relieves the body from memory and management overload. However, with prolonged use and adaptation, alarms begin to establish strong links with the event, such as waking up and ringtones. Perception patterns formed by those links will rigidify and form perception difficulties for the user. For example, when a ringtone is misplaced, even when set by the user, the user’s perception will be unable to switch to correct corresponding states, leading to incongruity of perception.
This work integrates a large number of electronic alarm clocks to form a close looped space around the viewer; alarm noises wander in space, tugging on their sensual and psychological states to create tension in the body. Arbitrarily occurring alarms will force the subject to enlarge the scope of perception to all corners, jumping and wavering in space with the alarm. The subject’s perception will be disintegrated in this spasm-like process, begging for a gap or brief rest before being reorganized.

Sound Road

Chen, Xiu-ying

➽ Work 2

Sound Road

People ripple through the city, producing a common rhythm and speed, passers-by accumulate data on a daily cycle, constructing a system of the city, where long distance causes rapid flow, short distance results in crowdedness, with different variations and tonality, in every city corner.
I take raw material from the streets, such as traffic, people and urban systems. These data are sent into a program and combined to form “channels”; they change according to the level of traffic. The rhythm of the number of people crossing the street per minute is the unit of time, which forms a loop in the channel. When data from sites around the city enter the program they mix with the data stream, and sound is created in the stream.

Dust

Lin,Shu-Yu

➽ Work 3

Dust

Blast fans will randomly blow in space, when a viewer approaches the beam a sensor is triggered and the fans stop running. Dust particles under the beam will evolve from a chaotic and visually indistinguishable state, into a gradually smooth, clearly visible ethereal state.

The Aging Place

Yang, Chao-Hao

➽ Work 4

The Aging Place

In my grandfather’s previous residence there was a courtyard, a whole floor of personal collection, an entire roof of flowers and gardening; as time passed, it was increasingly difficult for him to climb the stairs, and the scope of his activities slowly diminished, from the third floor to the second floor to the first floor; during his last year he rarely left the bed, and finally one day he laid in a corner of the living room, his body surrounded by colorful paper flowers.
The process of aging is dynamic and bound to space; the space you have contact with, that you’re in control of, is inversely proportional to your senility.
Jurisdiction minimization may just be the nature of aging.
I constructed an imitation of my grandfather’s cabinet to act as the frame of the installation, while the content is an animation of several spaces in my grandfather’s mansion transformed through imagination. Various elements of the space forms a collage for animation, along with the exhibition space, lighting, and atmosphere, I try to capture the dynamics of this narrative with the aesthetics of wabi-sabi.

The Power of PM

Huang, Ke-Ting

➽ Work 5

The Power of PM

<The power of PM> refers to the power and influence of small things; it’s an installation that presents small forces with enormous influence. This work incorporates the physical characteristics of domino chain reaction; ten rectangular boxes form a domino structure. At first the clinking sound is clear and gradually builds up to the final crash, once again, “Little things, big impact”, presenting the principle through installation. This work is site based, using different data as a trigger for the domino effect. In Taiwan, the data comes from air pollution ─ aerosols, tiny suspended particles invisible to the human eyes and unsusceptible until the concentration has exceeded, which then causes hazardous health concerns.

Make friends

➽ Work 6

Make friends

“Make Friends” is conceived from the development of Chinese characters. Human beings initially communicated by graphic symbols that slowly evolved into today’s characters. The work is interactive design-oriented, utilizing the original idea of the word, allowing users to experience the atmosphere of the evolution of text. The content is derived from the word “heart”, by squatting by the word the viewer makes friends with the word, like an exploration. Once the word is triggered, it comes to life and a static word becomes a dynamic process, at the same time triggering the viewer’s interest in the development of Chinese characters. Using ground projection as an interactive interface with a combination of interactive learning and design, the viewer can interact directly with the works and the evolution of Chinese characters.

《束》Beam

Laser Interactive

➽ Work 7

Beam

The internet collapses distance and time, bringing the whole world to us. People travel along fuzzy boundaries of the real and virtual, living in large and small screens, emitting countless number of lines of speed and information that adheres to our brains, occupying our sight and mind. As we browse through information, we too suffer from penetration, tear, tension, and deprivation of the subject.
“Beam” constructs a closed field by utilizing cold mechanical devices; the flow of information is sent into the laser beam, precise shot and tightly attached to the viewer, crashing with the viewer’s sensory experience.

《嗝2》Burp 2

Huang, Wan-Jyun

➽ Work 8

Burp 2

The virtualization of capital; media manipulated market prices; these phenomenon inspired this work. Like buying stock shares, when figures are erased of value, they’re as good as bubbles. Money doesn’t necessarily present quality of life, like the bubbles in beer, once they enter the body and reach a certain point they become gas and disappear into thin air.

Hello,Lag

Hsu,Yuan-Yao

Chen,Pin-Hsin

➽ Work 9

Hello,Lag

Lag carries the meaning of “delay”, mainly seen in the use of describing technological products. The term was later used to describe the human condition. Are we, beings that strongly rely on technological products, influenced by “Lag”? It’s starting to reflect on our emotion, behavior, and thoughts; we’ve just never noticed its existence.

Kuo, Ssu-Chieh

➽ Work 10

A Little Bit World

I’ve tried to explore the combination of various materials, through experiments I try to construct an interactive installation. As viewers approach the artwork a sensor is triggered. The dishwashing liquid and color liquid will drip on the plate, which in initiates a chemical reaction upon contact with milk. On the surface of the milk color elements will spread out unpredictability just like different moments in everyone’s life.

Ruminating Memory

Lin,Jia-Run

➽ Work 11

Ruminating Memory

Rumination, a kind of ” once again “, a ” past tense ” state. Usually suffering from depression really is bitter! Memory rumination is an exploration of depression: people will constantly revisit negative thoughts. Psychological studies found this trait with mostly women: A state of living in the past, an inability to remove burden. Constructed of many secrets and complaints, more seriously this is the so-called ” depression .”Talking to oneself, whether meaninglessly, or sudden crying and laughing….. sadness is always greater than laughter. Unable to restrain myself from thinking, stepping into this hell, unable to pull away. This works uses recording tape. Blank cassettes represent the self; tape as memory; magnetic powder as melancholy and events of everyday life. This work will be performance -based, and then documented for exhibition.
Performances will use blank tapes to record bits of life: the meaningful and meaningless, fragmented inspirations, occasional fantasies…then scraped off by tooth and eaten, and replayed.
